一般的过程涉及筛选数字采样输入信号，处理考虑当前的输入的值和考虑上述的条目。最后一步是对输出信号的重构。
在一般机械加工是：
1 把当前的样品和一些以前的样品 （其中有先前已存储） 乘以系数定义。
2 也可以采取在过去时刻的输出值，再乘以其他因素。
3 最后，所有的这些乘法结果总结来发泄到当前时刻。
内部处理，数字滤波器的输入，因此可能需要为使用模拟信号的数字滤波器模拟数字或数字-模拟转换。
一个重要问题是考虑奈奎斯特采样定理香农输入滤波器的局限性概括地说 ；如果我想要到 10 千赫频率处理，我必须样品至少 20 千赫。
