哲学家就餐问题归纳为五个哲学家坐在一张桌子做两件事之一： 吃或思考。吃时，他们不思维，并同时观想，他们不吃。五个哲学家的圆形餐桌上坐着一大碗的面条在中心。一把叉子放在每一对相邻的哲学家，和，因此每个哲学家有一把叉子，在他的左边和一把叉子，向他的右边。由于意大利面条很难服务，用一个叉子吃，假定一个哲学家必须用两把叉子吃饭。每个哲学家可以只使用叉子在他立即左和直接权限。
